IIT-Madras is in the forefront of putting together an online learning programme that may soon lead to distance education graduates from India's most prestigious technical institutions. For the last five years, the National Project on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) is creating material for 239 courses (equivalent to more than 9,500 hours of lecture) in core sciences as well as mechanical, civil, computer science, electrical and electronics and communication engineering, and making them available in web and video format. 129 courses are available on the NPTEL website (http://nptel.iitm.ac.in) in HTML and PDF formats, the 110 video courses are regularly broadcast on DD Eklavya. This year, NPTEL is putting these 110 courses on YouTube (www.youtube.com/iit).

The main objective of NPTEL program is to enhance the quality of engineering education in the country by developing curriculum based video and web courses. This is being carried out by seven IITs and IISc Bangalore as a collaborative project.

Five major engineering disciplines have been covered in this project so far (NPTEL Phase I) at the undergraduate (B.E./B.Tech) level. 1. Civil Engineering 2. Computer Science and Engineering 3. Electrical Engineering 4. Electronics and Communication Engineering 5. Mechanical Engineering In addition, a number of core curriculum courses common to all engineering programmes such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, management, electronics, language etc. have also been included.
