Netaji Subhas Open University, Kolkata (the only state open University in West Bengal, India), in collaboration with the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore, India (the Premier Language Institute in India under the aegis of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India), has launched Bangla Online (an Online Language Teaching Course on Bangla / Bengali Language) on March 24, 2004. Gyan Vani Kolkata, an FM Channel dedicated to education, set up by Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU), went on air at 4 p.m. July 7, 2003 from the University's new audio studio at Garcha Road. Gyan Vani Kolkata endeavours to bring about educational and social development of the community through radio.

Netaji Subhas Open University is recognized by University Grants Commission(UGC) u/s 2(f) vide letter No.F.9-2/97 (CPP-I) dated 26 August, 1998. The University is recognized by Distance Education Council (DEC) vide letter No.f.DEC/OU/Recog/2008 dated 8 April, 2008 and is recognized by Govt. of West Bengal vide letter No.316-SE(Aptt.) dated 21 March 2000 and 501-SE(A)/10M-51/99 dated 15 May 2000.
