and distance education owes its genesis to this gap, the need to
provide higher education to all as well as to fulfil lifelong learning
requirements.
Now
lot of students are opting the mode of distance education as Distance
education or correspondence courses gives students the flexibility
of study anywhere and anytime plus now students get the support
of study centres which are mushrooming in every small and big city.Students
need not to change the choice of course because he or she did not
get admission into a regular college. Lot of students are realising
that getting a mere Bachelors or Master's degree may not be sufficient
to enter the professional world and are keen on acquiring job-oriented
skills and qualifications through Distance education or Correspondence
courses.
Most
of the Distance education for Agriculture Related Programmes is
conducted through Annamalai University. Universities for distance
education in Advertising are Madurai Kamaraj University and Makhanlal
Chaturvedi Rashtriya Patrakarita Vishwavidyalaya conducting M.A
and Post Graduate Diploma in Advertising.Most of the universities
conduct Bachelor of Arts (BA) and B.Com Bachelor of Commerce through
correspondence.
Distance
Learning IT Courses are conducted through Mumbai University. Some
of the Universities offering a UG / PG qualification in Computer
Science are IIT - KReSIT (Mumbai), STES (Pune) and VNIT (Nagpur)

learning like Certificate In Computer Programming (CCP), Rural Development,
English For Communication, Home Management, Fashion Design And Merchandising
(FDM), Cosmetic Science, Diet Therapy and Disaster Management.
Universities
for Bachelor Of Journalism & Mass Communication (BJMC) through Distance
Education are Awadesh Pratap Singh University, Barkatullah University,
Dr. Hari Singh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, Guru Ghasidas University, Kota
Open University, Mahatma Gandhi Gramodaya Vishwavidyalaya and Nalanda
Open University.
The Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore,
a subordinate office has been helping in evolving and implementing
the language policy of the Government of India and coordinating
the development of Indian Languages by conducting research in the
areas of Language Analysis, Language Pedagogy, Language Technology
and Language use in society, a bias towards problem solving and
National Integration. In order to bring about substantial improvement
in the standards of teaching/learning of English, the Government
is giving assistance through the Central Institute of English and
Foreign Languages (CIEFL), Hyderabad for the setting up of at least
one district centre for English language in each State. The Central
Hindi Directorate was set up in March 1960 as a subordinate office
of the Ministry of Education. The Directorate has since been implementing
a number of schemes for the promotion and development of Hindi.
