The University is located in Kurukshetra. It offers UG, PG, Certificate, PG Diploma and Diploma courses. Kurukshetra University got DEC Programme-wise Regular Recognition from 2010-11 for conducting B.A, M.A, B.Com, M.Sc, M.Com, BCA, PGDCA, MCA, MBA, LLM, B.ed, B.Li.Sc, M.Li.Sc and BIM through distance education. The Kurukshetra University was established in 1956 as a unitary residential University. Starting with only the Department of Sanskrit, it has grown into a multi-faculty University as one of the premier centres for advanced study and research in the region. The Directorate of Distance Education was started by the University as Directorate of Correspondence Courses in 1976. Directorate now enrols every year around 29,000 students in the areas of Education, Computer Science, Management, Science, Commerce, Library & Information Science, Journalism, Law, etc Courses - The Directorate is offering 36 programmes, which include both traditional and professional courses. Two-year teacher education (B.Ed.) programme duly approved by NCTE for in-service teachers is one of the prestigious programmes offered by the Directorate. University also offers courses in Science (M.Sc), Arts (B.A & M.A), Commerce (B.Com & M.Com) , Vocational (Diploma, Certificate & PG Diploma) and Professional (MBA, MCA, BBA, BIM, BCA, B.LI.Sc, M.LI.Sc and LLM) through distance learning.
Methodology - Under Academic activities students are provided study material, home assignments and contact programmes. The Directorate has introduced Radio Broadcast lecture series GYAN SANCHAR from AIR, Kurukshetra. These lectures can be heard on 101.4 MHz every Sunday from 9:00 to 9:30 AM. The Directorate has also set up a Satellite Interactive Terminal for receiving programmes from EDUSAT using IGNOU National Beam.
Internal Assesment - 20% Internal Assessment has been introduced in each theory papers of the Undergraduate courses in a phased manner. The courses are - B.A, B.Com, B.I.M, B.C.A, CCU, CCA, CCFD, D.Lib.Sc and B.Lib.Sc. The Directorate would supply to the students two questions (each question having 2 parts) on each course of the programme. The students will prepare one handwritten Assignment of 10 pages (A4 Size) minimum attempting any one of the supplied questions in each Theory Paper of the concerned course carrying 20 marks each and submit the same in the Directorate by 31st December every year or one month after the admission to the course whichever is later.
Personal Contact Programmes - The Directorate organizes short term, condensed, intensive PCPs both for theory and practical contents of the courses conducted by the University Teaching Departments in the University and at various other Centres of University affiliated Colleges for the benefit of the students. The Directorate has a separate three-storey teaching-block exclusively for the distance education students. It houses well-equipped, centrally air-conditioned Computer Labs and Library, lecture halls, common-rooms, teacher-rooms, canteen, etc. 75% attendance for B.Ed. and 50% for other courses shall be compulsory for candidates to become eligible to appear in the examination. Selection - Admission to courses are made through Merit. Admission to M.B.A. / M.B.A. (Hospitality Management) / M.C.A. Part-I would be made through a Common Entrance Test to be conducted. However, the candidates who have cleared the Entrance Test for admission to Management / Computer Programmes like CAT / MAT / State Level Tests etc. are exempted from appearing in the Common Entrance Test.

The candidates seeking admission to distance education courses of this University are advised to contact the Directorate directly at their own level.
Application Procedure - Prospectus containing Admission Form and other details can be obtained from the Manager (P & P), K.U., Kurukshetra at the University Press counter or by post by sending a Bank Draft in favour of the Registrar, Kurukshetra University payable at Kurukshetra. Candidates can get from the Head / Authorised Post Offices in Haryana, Punjab, H.P., U.P., Uttranchal, Rajasthan & Delhi.
